What do you long for – what do you expectantly long for in your life?

Paul writes in Romans 8 that the entire creation is longing, waiting with eager expectation, groaning inwardly. This is longing. Longing for a better day. Longing for a better creation. Longing for healthy bodies. Longing for more intimate, emotionally healthy relationships. Longing for the world to be right. We inwardly long for what we were created to experience! So much has gone wrong because of sin and Satan that our vision of the future is clouded. We begin to have a hard time imagining a better future. We’re so used to a broken world (of disasters, mass shootings, immorality, sex abuse) that it’s hard to envision a better future. And yet a better future is exactly what God gives us and John records for us in Revelation chapters 21-22. God’s promised vision for a better future is the re-creation of the world. “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.”  All things are going to be made new – even the Holy City of Jerusalem. What’s going to happen in the future is that God is going to re-create a home for his people. That home – the Holy City, the new Jerusalem – is being prepared in heaven. Jesus has gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us – his dream home And it will come down from heaven onto the earth: “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.” (Rev 21:3) God himself – the Father, Son & Holy Spirit – is going to dwell among his people. God is no longer going to dwell in heaven. The throne room of God is now the new Jerusalem on the earth! God is going to make the New Jerusalem his throne room, and the entire earth is destined to be re-created as the seat of his throne. There will be no other place like it in all the galaxies in the universe. The earth is unique in all of creation because here is where God will dwell with his people, just like he did in the beginning in the Garden of Eden. We are going to get back to the garden where the curse of sin & death will be reversed. The answer to the problems of life does not lie in the way man tries to create a better future. The answer lies in Jesus, the One who creates the best future for his people! Do you long for Jesus to return? Do you long for the best future you can ever have? Come, Lord Jesus!
